Field Practical Guide - Mulch Application

Personal Protection Equipment required:
 
● Ear Plugs
● Safety Glasses
● Gloves
● Work Boots 

Equipment & Tools needed:
● Wheelbarrow
● Pitchfork
● Backpack Blower

Materials needed:  
● Mulch

Pre-Training Session Preparation:

● Select location for training.
● Schedule training session with student(s).
● Make sure everyone participating has the Personal Protection Equipment.
● Collect and have ready the needed equipment and materials. 

Step 1: Demonstrate 
● Check for irrigation heads/pipes, in-ground light fixtures and termite bait devices around house.
● Spread mulch to proper 4” depth.
● Focus Points:
     1.  Working from rear of bed to front.
     2. Making sure not to cover plants with mulch.
     3. Smoothing over the mulch.
     4. Tapering the mulch as it nears the garden bed edge.
● Clean up.

Step 2: Observe:
● Have the student demonstrate proper use of the equipment back to you.

Step 3: Re-Demonstrate:
● Point out what the student did correctly.
● Demonstrate what the student should improve upon.
